Self-esteem is fundamentally the evaluation of one's own worth. It's the internal sense of being good enough and worthy of love and respect from others. High self-esteem is characterized by a positive self-regard, while low self-esteem may involve feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt.

High self-esteem can lead to several positive outcomes, including:

  • Better mental health: Less prone to anxiety and depression.

  • Resilience: Greater ability to rebound from setbacks and failures.

  • Relationship satisfaction: More likely to form healthy, fulfilling relationships.

Tools to improve self-esteem

Journaling for Self-Compassion: Engage in regular journaling to develop self-compassion and see problems through different lenses. Dedicate a few minutes each day to reflect on your experiences, analyzing both successes and challenges. When writing about difficulties, view them objectively and focus on learning from these situations. Highlight instances where you managed situations well, reinforcing your capability to influence outcomes. Include compassionate self-talk, such as “It’s okay to make mistakes, I am learning and growing.” Periodically review your journal to track progress, recognize patterns of growth, and identify areas for further development.

Skill Development: Focus on mastering one specific skill or product. For example, if you want to improve your public speaking, dedicate time each day to practice speeches, learn techniques, and seek opportunities to speak publicly. Mastering this one skill will build confidence and demonstrate your ability to influence your environment.

Setting and Achieving Goals: Be ambitious yet practical in your goal setting. Identify a significant goal and break it down into actionable steps you can achieve today. For instance, if you aim to write a book, start by writing one page today. Achieving these small, daily goals builds momentum and reinforces your belief in your ability to accomplish larger objectives.

Seeking Feedback: Once a month, ask for specific improvement points from trusted colleagues, friends, or mentors. Approach them with clear questions about areas you want to grow in, such as, “How can I improve my presentation skills?” Use this feedback constructively to identify areas for growth and validate your progress, reinforcing a positive self-image.
