Yesterday, a boy was having fun. He was having a great time. He was with his friends.


The sun was shining, the wind was blowing.


They were eating, they were drinking, and they were playing.


The boy was running around. His friends were laughing out loud.


They boys and the girls were talking loud. Everybody was happy.


Was it a problem? Yes, it was. The teacher was giving a class.


The teacher was trying to teach, but the children were not listening.


They were all having too much fun. But the teacher was not happy.


Exercise

Exercise 1: True or False Read the statements and decide if they are true or false according to the text.

  1. The boy was sad yesterday.

  2. The boy was spending time alone.

  3. It was a windy and sunny day.

  4. The children were studying during the class.

  5. The teacher was happy with the students.

  6. The children were paying attention to the teacher.

Exercise 2: Complete the Sentence Complete the sentences using the past continuous form of the verb.

  1. While the children _______ (play), the teacher _______ (try) to teach.

  2. The children _______ (not listen) to the teacher because they _______ (have) too much fun.

  3. The boys and the girls _______ (talk) so loudly that they _______ (not hear) the teacher.

  4. The sun _______ (shine) and the wind _______ (blow), while chaos _______ (ensue) in the classroom.


Exercise 3: Rearrange the Sentences

Rearrange the words to make a sentence in the past continuous tense.

  4. not / were / children / the / listening

Exercise 4: Match the Sentences

Match the beginning of the sentences to their endings.

  1. The boy was having fun...

  4. The children were not listening...

B. ...but they were too busy having fun.

C. ...while his friends were laughing.

D. ...but the noise was too loud.


Exercise 5: Write a Short Story Now, it's your turn to use the past continuous tense. Write a short story about a day at the beach. Use the past continuous tense to describe what you and your friends were doing. Remember to describe the weather and the atmosphere as well.

Try to use these phrases in your story:

  • The waves were crashing...

  • We were building...

  • We were enjoying...

  • They were eating....

  • The sun was setting...

Remember, the past continuous tense is used to describe actions that were in progress at a specific time in the past. It's also used to describe two actions that were happening at the same time. Use these rules to help you form your sentences.
