From Ancient Times to the Modern Era

The history of lenses and glasses can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where the use of lenses can be seen in various forms such as magnifying glasses and burning glasses.

The ancient Romans and Greeks used lenses made of smoky quartz, which were used as magnifying glasses to help with reading and writing.

In the middle ages, the use of lenses became more widespread, and reading stones made of convex lenses were used to magnify texts.

The first eyeglasses were invented in Italy in the late 13th century, and were used to correct farsightedness. These early glasses had convex lenses that magnified objects, and were designed to be held in front of the eyes rather than worn on the face.

In the 16th century, the design of eyeglasses changed to include a bridge and a frame to hold the lenses in place, and by the 17th century, the invention of the printing press had led to an increased demand for eyeglasses among people who needed them for reading.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, advancements in optics and lens grinding technology allowed for the production of more advanced lenses and glasses, the spectacles were created. The invention of the concave lens, which corrected nearsightedness, made it possible for people with a wider range of visual impairments to use glasses.
