When deciding on skills to improve, whether by taking courses or gaining hands-on experience, consider these three important factors. These will help ensure the skills you choose align with what you enjoy and can effectively use in practical situations.

  1. Interest in Learning: First, make sure you really like learning the skill. It’s essential that you're interested in the topic, as this will keep you motivated to continue learning.

  2. Desire to Apply Knowledge: Next, it’s important to want to use your new skills in a real-world setting. This means thinking about how you can apply what you learn to create something valuable or solve problems.

  3. Potential to Excel: Finally, evaluate whether you have the potential to be really good at this skill. Consider your natural abilities and how they might help you excel in this area.

This young woman is a prime example of someone who has skillfully applied the three key criteria for skill development:

  1. Interest in Learning: Her passion for video editing isn't just a hobby—it's a deep-seated interest that drove her to absorb everything she could about the craft. This enthusiasm for storytelling through video has fueled her dedication to continually enhance her abilities and stay abreast of the latest editing technologies.

  2. Desire to Apply Knowledge: More than just learning, she was eager to utilize her skills in real-world applications. Choosing a career as a freelance video editor allowed her to work on diverse projects, from advertising campaigns to personal documentaries. This role not only aligns with her creative inclinations but also keeps her professionally fulfilled by seeing her work come to life.

  3. Potential to Excel: She had all the necessary tools to excel—access to a good computer, editing software, and a camera. Coupled with her need to work remotely due to her responsibilities as a mother, video editing was the perfect fit. Furthermore, her shy personality made traditional roles involving extensive personal interaction, like sales, less appealing. In video editing, she found a profession where she could shine without having to overcome her introversion.
