A regra espelha a do comparativo. Curto ganha the … -est: cheap → the cheapest. Longo ganha the most: expensive → the most expensive. Irregulares: good → the best, bad → the worst, far → the farthest. Quase sempre com the. E duas estruturas que aparecem em toda conversa: one of the + plural (one of the best days) e the … I've ever … (the best movie I've ever seen).
São frases curtas do dia a dia de trabalho (cliente, produto, prazo, equipe), em quatro grupos: the -est, the most, one of the e tudo misturado, sempre com afirmativa, negativa e pergunta no meio.
Adjetivo curto: the + -est: the cheapest, the biggest. E good e bad viram the best e the worst.
Agora a velocidade. A isca é o superlativo errado (the most big, the most tallest, the goodest, the expensivest, one of the best day), e quem bate nela lê o motivo na hora. Escolha the -est, the most, one of the ou tudo misturado: o jogo guarda o recorde de cada um.
🎮 Whack-a-Best: the -est, the most, one of the ou tudo
O superlativo em trinta segundos
A regra é a do comparativo, com the na frente e -est ou most no lugar de -er ou more. Uma sílaba (cheap, big, fast) e duas terminadas em -y (easy, busy) ganham -est: the cheapest, the easiest. O resto ganha the most: the most expensive. E o grupo, quando aparece, vem com in (um lugar ou time) ou of (um conjunto): the best in the world, the best of all.
| Adjetivo | Comparativo | Superlativo |
|---|---|---|
| cheap (curto) | cheaper than | the cheapest |
| easy (termina em -y) | easier than | the easiest |
| expensive (longo) | more expensive than | the most expensive |
| good (irregular) | better than | the best |
| bad (irregular) | worse than | the worst |
- the -est: It's the cheapest option. (Degrau 1)
- the most: It's the most expensive plan. (Degrau 2)
- Os irregulares: the best, the worst, the farthest. (Degrau 3)
- in, of e o possessivo: the best in the world, my best friend. (Degrau 4)
- one of the + plural: one of the biggest banks. (Degrau 5)
- ever: the best movie I've ever seen. (Degrau 6)
Degrau 1: the -est, o adjetivo curto
Adjetivo de uma sílaba ganha the na frente e -est no fim: Friday is the busiest day, It's the biggest client. Não entra most: the most big é o erro número um, e the most biggest é dose dupla. É só pôr o the e acrescentar o -est: the cheapest, the fastest, the oldest, the biggest, the easiest.
| Adjetivo | Superlativo | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
| cheap | the cheapest | This is the cheapest option. |
| fast | the fastest | Daniel is the fastest on the team. |
| old | the oldest | Who is the oldest person here? |
| big | the biggest | It's our biggest client. |
| busy | the busiest | Friday is the busiest day. |
Degrau 2: the most e the least, o adjetivo longo
Com duas sílabas ou mais (fora as terminadas em -y), o adjetivo fica inteiro e o the most vai na frente: the most expensive, the most important, the most organized. O contrário é the least, o menos: the least expensive option, a opção menos cara. O erro inverso, de novo, é colar -est em adjetivo longo: the expensivest, the importantest. E juntar os dois: the most expensivest.
| Em vez de | Diga | Em português |
|---|---|---|
| It's the most big. | It's the biggest. | É o maior. |
| She's the most tallest. | She's the tallest. | Ela é a mais alta. |
| It's the expensivest. | It's the most expensive. | É o mais caro. |
| It's the importantest. | It's the most important. | É o mais importante. |
| It's the less expensive. | It's the least expensive. | É o menos caro. |
Quiz dos degraus 1 e 2: the -est ou the most?
A pronúncia: o -est, o the e o most
O -est é fraco, quase -ist: the biggest soa dhe-BI-guist. O the muda antes de vogal: the cheapest é dhe, mas the easiest é dhi, com i. E em the most, a força fica no adjetivo que vem depois: the most exPENsive.
Degrau 3: os irregulares (the best, the worst, the farthest)
Good vira the best, bad vira the worst, far vira the farthest (ou the furthest). Para quantidade, the most e the least: Who has the most clients?.
| Adjetivo | Comparativo | Superlativo |
|---|---|---|
| good | better | the best |
| bad | worse | the worst |
| far | farther / further | the farthest / the furthest |
| much / many | more | the most |
| little | less | the least |

Degrau 4: in, of e o possessivo
In para um lugar ou um grupo organizado: the tallest building in the world, the cleanest desk in the office, the biggest bank in Brazil. Of para um conjunto ou um período: the best of all, the busiest month of the year, the most fun day of the year. O brasileiro traduz o do e diz the best of the world: soa estranho. E o the pode sair quando entra um possessivo: my best friend, our biggest client, nunca the my best friend.
| Em vez de | Diga | Por quê |
|---|---|---|
| the tallest building of the world | the tallest building in the world | Lugar: in. |
| the cleanest desk of the office | the cleanest desk in the office | Lugar: in. |
| the busiest month in the year | the busiest month of the year | Período: of. |
| the best in all | the best of all | Conjunto: of. |
| the my best friend | my best friend | Com possessivo, o the sai. |
Degrau 5: one of the + plural
One of the + superlativo + substantivo no plural: one of the biggest banks, one of the largest contracts in the company's history. O erro é deixar o substantivo no singular, como às vezes se ouve em português: one of the best day. Se é um entre vários, o substantivo vai no plural, e o verbo concorda com o one: One of the best players is injured.
| Em vez de | Diga | Em português |
|---|---|---|
| one of the best day | one of the best days | um dos melhores dias |
| one of the biggest bank | one of the biggest banks | um dos maiores bancos |
| one of best players | one of the best players | um dos melhores jogadores |
| one of the better players | one of the best players | um dos melhores jogadores |
| One of my friends are here. | One of my friends is here. | Um dos meus amigos está aqui. |

I've ever seen, the hardest exam I've ever taken, the coldest temperature ever recorded. O ever é o já, em toda a vida. Na pergunta, o superlativo pede What's the …? ou Who's the …?: What's the tallest building in the world?, Who's the oldest person on the team?. O erro comum aqui é usar o passado simples com ever (the best movie I ever saw existe no inglês americano informal, mas o I've ever seen é o que funciona em qualquer situação).
| Português | Inglês | Repare |
|---|---|---|
| o melhor filme que eu já vi | the best movie I've ever seen | superlativo + I've ever + particípio |
I've ever taken | take, took, taken |
| a temperatura mais baixa já registrada | the lowest temperature ever recorded | ever + particípio, sem I've |
| Qual é o prédio mais alto do mundo? | What's the tallest building in the world? | What's the … in …? |
| Quem é o mais velho do time? | Who's the oldest person on the team? | Who's the …? |

- the goodest: os irregulares são the best e the worst. (Degrau 3)
- of the world: para lugar, in the world; para período, of the year. (Degrau 4)

O superlativo no trabalho: destacar o que importa
Superlativo posiciona: our best-performing region, the most efficient process, one of our top priorities. O one of the é o aliado de quem fala com precisão: one of the largest contracts in the company's history diz muito, e não promete o que talvez não seja verdade.
