As preposições de lugar dizem onde uma coisa está: in (dentro), on (em cima, encostado), under (embaixo), next to (do lado), between (entre), behind (atrás), in front of (na frente), above (acima) e over (por cima). O brasileiro erra em dois pontos. O primeiro é o nosso em, que em inglês se divide: na geladeira é in the fridge, mas na mesa é on the table. O segundo é o de grudado onde o inglês não tem: under of, behind of e near of não existem.
A frase pede (Put the cat under the table) e você arrasta o gato até lá, em seis cenas: sala, cozinha, escritório, quarto, sala de aula e parque.
Atividades
1 · Put It There: arrume a casa
2 · Quiz: in, on, under e companhia
Acertou, a próxima entra sozinha; errou, você lê o porquê.
O em que vira in ou on, o de que não entra e os lados.
3 · Monte a frase
In é dentro, on é em cima ou encostado numa superfície, under é embaixo.
4 · Whack-a-Where
As frases sobem dos buracos. Bata nas certas e deixe as erradas descerem: a isca é o em virando in em cima de uma superfície (in the table, in the wall) ou o de do português grudado onde o inglês não tem (under of, behind of, near of). Escolha in · on · under, next to · between, behind · in front of ou tudo misturado: o jogo guarda o recorde de cada um.
5 · Visual Prompts: Where is the cat?
A frase inteira conta: It's under the table. Lugar certo com a frase errada (It under the table, under of the table, in front the house) vale metade.

A preposição de lugar vem antes da coisa que serve de referência: the cat is under the table.
| Preposição | Quer dizer | Exemplo do jogo |
|---|---|---|
| in | dentro | Put the milk in the fridge. |
| on | em cima, encostado | Put the books on the table. |
| under | embaixo | Put the cat under the table. |
| next to | do lado | Put the mouse next to the keyboard. |
| between | entre (duas coisas) | Put the backpack between the bed and the wardrobe. |
| behind | atrás | Put the bag behind the armchair. |
| in front of | na frente | Put the shoes in front of the sofa. |
| above | acima, sem encostar | Put the picture above the sofa. |
| over | por cima, cobrindo ou atravessando | Put the bridge over the river. |
| on the left of | à esquerda de | Put the headphones on the left of the computer. |
| in the corner | no canto | Put the cactus in the corner. |
| at | no ponto (endereço, lugar de encontro) | I'm at the station. |
- O em vira sempre in: in the table, in the wall, in the floor. Em cima de superfície é on: on the table, on the wall, on the floor.
- O de do português entra junto: under of the bed, behind of the door, near of my house. É under the bed, behind the door, near my house. O of só fica em in front of e em on the left of.
Degrau 1: in, on e under, o “em” que se divide
Under é embaixo. A mosca no teto também: on the ceiling.
| Português | Inglês | Por quê |
|---|---|---|
| na mesa | on the table | em cima da superfície |
| no chão | on the floor | o chão é superfície |
| na parede | on the wall | encostado na superfície |
| na prateleira | on the shelf | apoiado nela |
| na geladeira | in the fridge | dentro |
| no armário | in the cupboard | dentro |
| na árvore | in the tree | no meio das folhas |
| no céu | in the sky | dentro do espaço |
| no rio (o barco) | on the river | na superfície da água |
| embaixo da cama | under the bed | embaixo, sem of |

- On the bed é em cima da cama: a mala, o travesseiro, alguém sentado por cima da coberta.
- In bed, sem the, é deitado debaixo da coberta: I'm in bed (já estou deitado).
- O mesmo vale para a poltrona: sit in the armchair (afundado nela) e sit on the sofa (no assento).
Degrau 2: next to, near e between, do lado, perto e entre
Next to é colado do lado, e o to não sai: next to the bed. Near é perto, sem of e sem to: near my house. Close to também é perto, e esse leva to. Between é entre duas coisas, ligadas por and: between the bed and the wardrobe. Entre várias, o inglês usa among: among the trees.
| Preposição | Exemplo | Tradução |
|---|---|---|
| next to | The mouse is next to the keyboard. | O mouse está do lado do teclado. |
| beside | Sit beside me. | Senta do meu lado. |
| near | I live near the beach. | Moro perto da praia. |
| close to | It's close to the station. | É perto da estação. |
| between | The café is between the pharmacy and a bookstore. |
| among | The house is among the trees. | A casa fica no meio das árvores. |

Degrau 3: behind e in front of, e o “em frente” que é opposite
Behind é atrás, sem of: behind the door. In front of é na frente, e aqui o of fica, sem the no meio: in front of the desk, nunca in the front of the desk.
|---|---|---|
| behind | The chair is behind the desk. | A cadeira está atrás da mesa. |
| in front of | The bus stops in front of the school. | O ônibus para na frente da escola. |
| opposite | The bank is opposite the school. |
| across from | My office is across from the park. | Meu escritório fica em frente ao parque. |

Degrau 4: above, over e on, acima, por cima e encostado
On encosta: the books are on the table. Above fica acima, sem encostar: the picture is above the sofa, the clock is above the window. Over também fica por cima, mas cobrindo ou atravessando: the umbrella is over the table, there's a bridge over the river, the plane flew over the city. Para uma coisa simplesmente mais alta, os dois servem (a lamp above/over the table); para cobrir e atravessar, só over. O contrário de above é below, e o de over é under.
| Preposição | Exemplo | O que ela diz |
|---|---|---|
| on | The books are on the table. | encostado em cima |
| above | The picture is above the sofa. | mais alto, sem encostar |
| over | There's a bridge over the river. | por cima, atravessando |
| over | The umbrella is over the table. | por cima, cobrindo |
| below | The temperature is below zero. | abaixo (contrário de above) |
| under | The dog is under the tree. | embaixo (contrário de over) |

Degrau 5: on the left, on the right, in the corner e in the middle
Os lados são on the left e on the right, e com a referência ganham of: on the left of the sofa. To the left of diz o mesmo. O erro de tradução é in the left ou at the right. O canto de dentro de um cômodo é in the corner; a esquina da rua é on the corner (ou at the corner). O meio é in the middle of, e as pontas são at the top, at the bottom, at the back e at the front.
| Inglês | Português | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
| on the left (of) | à esquerda (de) | Put the headphones on the left of the computer. |
| on the right (of) | à direita (de) | The fridge is on the right. |
| in the corner | no canto (de dentro) | Put the cactus in the corner. |
| on the corner | na esquina | The café is on the corner. |
| in the middle (of) | no meio (de) | The table is in the middle of the kitchen. |
| at the top / at the bottom | em cima / embaixo (na ponta) | Your name is at the top of the page. |
| at the back / at the front | no fundo / na frente (de dentro) | Get a table at the back. |

Degrau 6: at, o ponto no mapa
I'm at work, at home, at school, at the station, at the door, at the bus stop. E o endereço com número: at 25 Oak Street. In fica para o lugar grande, que tem um dentro: in Brazil, in São Paulo, in the kitchen. On fica para a rua sem número e para o andar: on Oak Street, on the third floor. No transporte, in the car e in a taxi, mas on the bus, on the train e on the plane.
| Preposição | Para quê | Exemplos |
|---|---|---|
| at | o ponto, o lugar de encontro, o endereço com número | at home, at work, at the door, at 25 Oak Street |
| in | o lugar grande, com um dentro | in Brazil, in São Paulo, in the kitchen, in the car |
| on | a rua, o andar, o transporte coletivo | on Oak Street, on the third floor, on the bus |
- Em casa é at home, sem the. In home e in the home não servem para dizer onde você está.
- Com verbo de movimento, o at some: I'm going home, nunca going to home.

E o in, on, at de tempo?
As mesmas três palavras marcam o tempo, com a mesma lógica do maior para o menor: in para o período longo, on para o dia, at para a hora. O erro mais comum é in Monday: dia da semana é on Monday.
| Preposição | Tempo | Exemplos |
|---|---|---|
| in | meses, anos, estações, partes do dia | in May, in 2026, in the summer, in the morning |
| on | dias da semana e datas | on Monday, on July 4th, on my birthday |
| at | horas e momentos | at 9 a.m., at night, at lunchtime, at Christmas |
Os seis erros que entregam o brasileiro
- in em cima de superfície: in the table, in the wall, in the floor. É on the table, on the wall, on the floor. (Degrau 1)
- o de que gruda: under of, behind of, above of, near of. É under the bed, behind the door, near my house. (Degraus 1 a 4)
- next sem to: next the bank, next of the bank. É next to the bank. (Degrau 2)
- in front sem of, ou com the: in front the school, in the front of the school. É in front of the school. (Degrau 3)
- in front of no lugar de opposite: para o prédio do outro lado da rua, é opposite the bank ou across from the bank. (Degrau 3)
- o lado com in ou at: in the left, at the right. É on the left, on the right. (Degrau 5)
Para continuar praticando
As preposições de lugar andam junto com o vocabulário da casa, com o there is (there's a cat under the table) e com o imperativo do jogo (Put the cat…).
